JOB DESCRIPTION

Install, maintain, and repair wiring, electrical equipment, and fixtures. Measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble, and install electrical conduit using hacksaw and conduit bender. Pull wires through conduit and splice wires by stripping insulation from terminal leads and twisting or soldering.


SKILLS AND APTITUDES NEEDED

  • Basic knowledge in mathematics, electricity, electronics, mechanical drawing, science, and shop
  • Good agility and dexterity
  • Good health and at least average physical strength
  • Reading skills to work with building blueprints
  • Good color vision to identify electrical wires by color


Electricians install, connect, test, and maintain electrical systems for a variety of purposes. They may install and maintain electronic controls for machines in business and industry. They may install coaxial or fiber cable for computers and other telecommunications equipment. Some electricians install climate control, telephone, fire alarm and security systems. Electricians specializing in residential work may wire homes or replace old fuse boxes with new circuit breakers to accommodate additional appliances.

Electricians’ work is sometimes strenuous. They may stand for long periods of time and frequently work on ladders and scaffolds. Some may work in dusty, dirty, hot, or wet conditions, or in confined areas, ditches or other uncomfortable places. Electricians risk injury from electrical shock, falls, and cuts. Some electricians may have to travel to job sites.
