JOB DESCRIPTION

Perform work involving two or more maintenance skills. Keep the machines, mechanical equipment, and/or structure of an establishment in repair. This occupation is generally found in small establishments where specialization in maintenance work is impractical.

SKILLS AND APTITUDES NEEDED

  • Aptitude in mechanics
  • Basic knowledge in mechanical drawing, electricity, woodworking, blueprint reading, science, and mathematics
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability for problem-solving and to work without direct supervision
  • Manual dexterity
  • Good health and stamina for walking, standing, reaching and heavy lifting

General maintenance repairers repair and maintain plumbing, electrical, air-conditioning and heating systems. They may repair drywall, roofs, windows, doors, floors, woodwork, and other parts of building structures. They maintain and repair specialized equipment and machinery found in cafeterias, laundries, hospitals, stores, offices, and factories. New buildings sometimes have computer-controlled systems, requiring repairers to have basic computer skills. Repairers do routine preventive maintenance and ensure that machines continue to run smoothly, building systems operate efficiently, and the physical condition of buildings does not deteriorate. Some repairers may be on call for emergency repairs.
