SKILLS AND APTITUDES NEEDED

  • Ability to communicate clearly
  • Ability to inspire trust, confidence
  • Ability to motivate students and understand their educational and emotional needs
  • Be organized, dependable, patient, and creative

Elementary teachers must be able to recognize and respond to individual differences in students, and employ different teaching methods that will result in higher student achievement. They prepare a teaching outline for the course of study and prepare, administer, grade and record tests for their students.

Most elementary teachers instruct one class of children in several subjects. In some schools, two or more teachers work as a team and are jointly responsible for a group of students in at least one subject. In other schools, a teacher may teach one subject to a number of classes, such as music, art, reading, science, math, or physical education. A small number of teachers instruct multilevel classrooms, with students at several different learning
levels.
